My excitement turned to nervousness as I arrived at school that morning. I didnât know how my friends were going to react.
âOh my gosh,â Roxy said, coming up and hugging me in the courtyard. âI had the weirdest dreamâ¦you will not believe.â
I felt a sinking feeling.
Of course she thinks it was just a dreamâ¦
I could have tried to explain it to her, but how could she possibly believe me? Anyway, itâs better this wayâ¦I should never have brought my friends into this mess in the first place!
I smiled and nodded as Roxy told me what she remembered of the last night.
âHey!â Evan called out, running up to us. âGuess what? I had the weirdest dream!â
Roxy and I both looked at him.
âI was this amazing superhero, right, and I was test-lunging into this giant frogâs mouth, which was incredible because it wrapped me up in its tongue, and I went round and round.â
âNo way!â Roxy said, looking at me. I quickly looked away.
âThat wasnât even the weirdest thing,â Evan said. âThen you two showed up, and you needed my help â you were like âcome and rescue us, Evan, weâre being attackedâ. And I rescued you both â of courseâ.â
Roxy and I both laughed.
âLet me guess,â Roxy said. âAnd then we teleported to a beautiful clearing in a forest and ate magical berries?â
âHow did you know!?â asked Evan.
Roxy looked at me again, and this time I didnât look away.
âIt wasnât just a dream, was it, Awa?â she asked.
âNo,â I said, looking down again.
Roxy elbowed me in a playful way. âYou were fooling me, just before.â
I sighed.
âHonestly, I didnât think you would have believed me if I told you the truth, and I also still feel bad for putting you both in danger.â I turned to Evan. âAnd Iâm pretty sure you didnât rescue us â and we definitely didnât ask you to!â
âWe can agree to disagree,â said Evan, smiling.
Just then, the bell rang, but I promised to explain everything at lunch time, and I did. I also gave them the charm that Veila had given me, and clear instructions for how to use it properly, by relaxing and counting their breathing first, to centre, before saying the words as they drifted off to sleep.
I was hoping that giving them the instructions so clearly would help them to avoid all the trouble I once had in learning to get to the Grove.
âSo it was all true,â Roxy said. âEverything you told us in the grove. But you said that when you first learned to get there, you had to eat the Alisha tree berries or something?â
âThe Elisiad tree berries, yes,â I say.
âIs that necessary?â Evan asked, âOr are we awesome enough to get there all on our own with just that charm?â
âIâm not sure,â I said. âI hadnât thought of that. Iâm not sure if the berries are necessary to use the charm, or if they just helped me to find the grove in the first place.â
I thought about it quietly for a few moments, and then I added, âLetâs just try and see if we can get this to work.
