My excitement turned to nervousness as I arrived at school that morning. I didn’t know how my friends were going to react.

“Oh my gosh,” Roxy said, coming up and hugging me in the courtyard. “I had the weirdest dream…you will not believe.”

I felt a sinking feeling.

Of course she thinks it was just a dream…

I could have tried to explain it to her, but how could she possibly believe me? Anyway, it’s better this way…I should never have brought my friends into this mess in the first place!

I smiled and nodded as Roxy told me what she remembered of the last night.

“Hey!” Evan called out, running up to us. “Guess what? I had the weirdest dream!”

Roxy and I both looked at him.

“I was this amazing superhero, right, and I was test-lunging into this giant frog’s mouth, which was incredible because it wrapped me up in its tongue, and I went round and round.”

“No way!” Roxy said, looking at me. I quickly looked away.

“That wasn’t even the weirdest thing,” Evan said. “Then you two showed up, and you needed my help – you were like ‘come and rescue us, Evan, we’re being attacked’. And I rescued you both – of course’.”

Roxy and I both laughed.

“Let me guess,” Roxy said. “And then we teleported to a beautiful clearing in a forest and ate magical berries?”

“How did you know!?” asked Evan.

Roxy looked at me again, and this time I didn’t look away.

“It wasn’t just a dream, was it, Awa?” she asked.

“No,” I said, looking down again.

Roxy elbowed me in a playful way. “You were fooling me, just before.”

I sighed.

“Honestly, I didn’t think you would have believed me if I told you the truth, and I also still feel bad for putting you both in danger.” I turned to Evan. “And I’m pretty sure you didn’t rescue us – and we definitely didn’t ask you to!”

“We can agree to disagree,” said Evan, smiling.

Just then, the bell rang, but I promised to explain everything at lunch time, and I did. I also gave them the charm that Veila had given me, and clear instructions for how to use it properly, by relaxing and counting their breathing first, to centre, before saying the words as they drifted off to sleep.

I was hoping that giving them the instructions so clearly would help them to avoid all the trouble I once had in learning to get to the Grove.

“So it was all true,” Roxy said. “Everything you told us in the grove. But you said that when you first learned to get there, you had to eat the Alisha tree berries or something?”

“The Elisiad tree berries, yes,” I say.

“Is that necessary?” Evan asked, “Or are we awesome enough to get there all on our own with just that charm?”

“I’m not sure,” I said. “I hadn’t thought of that. I’m not sure if the berries are necessary to use the charm, or if they just helped me to find the grove in the first place.”

I thought about it quietly for a few moments, and then I added, “Let’s just try and see if we can get this to work.
